Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment is designed to repair an abnormal bite (malocclusion) and/or correct irregularly positioned teeth. Typically, teeth and bites are adjusted through the use of dental braces, a fixed orthodontic appliance which can be fashioned out of stainless steel or ceramic material.

Braces can be used by an orthodontist in conjunction with removable dental appliances, plates, headgear, elastic bands, and other expansion and functional appliances. Damon brackets and ceramic brackets are two of the most popular forms of dental braces used to reposition teeth and correct malocclusion. Patients may opt for ceramic braces, clear braces or steel metal braces.

After the patient undergoes active orthodontics treatment (braces), he or she will often wear a retainer to maintain the teeth in their new position while surrounding bone and gum tissue reform. Although it is possible for teeth to stay aligned without the use of an orthodontic retainer, teeth frequently crowd or drift without retention measures as they age.

Before undergoing orthodontic treatment, discuss various forms of orthodontic appliances (fixed and removable) with your orthodontist as well as the types of dental insurance her or she accepts.
