Orthodontist Training and Credentials

Different regions of the world have various systems for training and certifying dentists in the orthodontics specialty; typically a period of post-graduate study at an accredited university or college of orthodontics is necessary for a qualified dentist to become a certified dental orthodontist. In the UK, training at an orthodontist school lasts three years after completion of a fellowship diploma from a Royal College.

In Europe and the United States, becoming an orthodontist follows a similar trajectory. When attempting to find an orthodontist who is a recognized specialist, you may want to contact the professional organization of certification.

Orthodontists who are members of the American Association of Orthodontists are dental specialists who have undergone a minimum of two years of post-doctoral training--advanced study in orthodontics in a university-based program accredited by the American Dental Association. Qualified orthodontists who pursue specialty education study in the areas of biomedical, behavior and basic science; oral biology; and biomechanics as well as orthodontia.
