Retention

Retention

The final stage in orthodontic treatment is the retention of newly corrected dental occlusion (bite). Because the teeth have been moved by orthodontic appliances to correct a dental malocclusion (bad bite), teeth can also return to the same malocclusion (Class I, Class II or Class III Malocclusion) if preventative steps are not taken by the orthodontist and patient.

Retention stabilizes the newly configured teeth so that they do not drift back to their problematic position or relapse.

A method of retention after active orthodontics treatment (braces), orthodontic retainers hold teeth in the newly correctly position until the supporting gum and bone tissue reform and strengthen around the teeth. The retention process typically lasts between six and twelve months.
